Console Classix is a bit of an anomaly in our video game rental category. As it appeals to a niche market, it can't quite be reviewed on the same terms as the rest of the sites in the category. Don't let its low place in the top ten affect your judgement of it. Console Classix should definitely not be overlooked.
The idea behind the service is to let you, as the name might suggest, rent classic console games. Most of the popular consoles from the late 80s and early nineties are supported and there is a huge variety of titles for each. To get at them you first have to download a front end client to your Windows PC (Mac and Linux aren't yet supported) and sign up for an account. This provides you with a really easy to use interface to the thousands of available games. Games are organised first by console and then divided into lots of different sub categories to choose from depending on what you feel like playing.
Now, we know the question you are going to ask - is this legal? We asked it too. Well, the good news is that the answer is probably.and even if it's not, you don't have anything to worry about! The system is based on the premise that it is legal for someone to lend you a copy of a game they own. This is essentially what Console Classix are doing, and when you access the games through the front end they are temporarily stored on your computer until you are finished playing, at which point they are deleted. The downside of this is that Console Classix can only let as many people play at once as the number of original copies of the game they own in order to keep it legal.
However, we still managed to play all the games we wanted without having to wait very long. (And once we got on to Legend of Zelda there was no way anyone else was getting that for a while!). What's more, the way the games are organised led us to find loads of other titles that we had forgotten about. Calafornia Games anyone? Or Rampage perhaps?
Console Classix is by far the cheapest service on offer and, in terms of games per dollar, blows away the competition. Not only is it cheap, but you can pay for your membership by donating any classic console games you happen to own. This way, we can see it becoming a huge community for classics fans and we would love to have a look around the Console Classix storerooms!
Console Classix is a different kind of video game rental service. If you want an easy and cheap way of playing all the old favourites, then this is definitely for you. However, don't expect to be getting all the latest shiny new games here. Despite it's, at best, uncertain legality Console Classix is a novel idea and provides an excellent service.
