On first impressions Rentzero does not have the highly polished and professional look that a lot of rental websites have. The main page, in particular, does not fill you with enthusiasm for the company. However, on testing their service we were pleasantly surprised.
The service works, as all of these types of service do, by you selecting a number of games to be added to your queue. When you first create the queue Rentzero will send you out the first available game on it. After this, each time you return a game the next available one at the top of your list will be sent out to you.
Although the website does not have all the bells and whistles that some others may have it is, nevertheless, very simple and easy to use. The system for setting the priority of the games in your queue is as simple as typing a number into a box. This then informs the worker bees in the distribution centre that you would much prefer to have "Halo 3" sent out than "Spongebob" the game. The worker bees also do a pretty good job of keeping the website up to date with details of the availability of games. This is something we always look for in a game rental website because we hear so many tales of companies misinforming its customers.
One of the unique features of Rentzero is that you can pay for your subscription by trading in your old games. Obviously the amount you get for your game depends on how old it is, but in our opinion, the prices seemed to be comparable with what you would expect in your local video games shop. Since Rentzero also allows you to pay by the year - for a very reasonable discount - this could mean that, with a big enough games collection, you could pay for an entire year of membership using this method!
One of the things that did disappoint us about Rentzero is that they only have one distribution centre for the whole U.S. It's based in Houston, Texas so if you live near there things will be fine, but for those who live in rural parts it could take a while for games to be delivered. However, Rentzero is a fairly new company and we expect that they would be thinking about opening new distribution centres before too long.
As we start to move into the mid territory of our video game rental rankings it's clear to see that we can't expect all the extra bonuses and features of those further up the list. However, what Rentzero does provide is a wide variety of games to choose from and solid reliable service - especially if you live in Texas. In our opinion Rentzero is a fairly recent entry into the market and is doing a good job of taking on the big boys in the game.
